The Wilcox Late Night Basketball Program aims to provide creative alternatives for youths through cultural and recreational activities to reduce gang violence and criminal activity.

 

WHO:  Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox

WHAT: 18th Annual Wilcox Late Night Basketball Awards Ceremony and All-Star Games

WHEN &WHERE:   

            1) Friday, August 1st, Awards Ceremony beginning at 6:00 PM

             St. Anthony’s Church, 909 S. 1st Ave. (1st Ave and 1 blk. N. Buckeye)

             

             2.) Saturday, August 2nd, Free Food, Family Festival beginning at 6:30 PM

             Saturday night family festival: Grant Park, 701 S. 3rd Ave.

             Downtown Phoenix     

FREE and open to the public.

 

The 18th Annual Wilcox Late Night Basketball for youth ages 12 to 18, culminates with two special event: an awards ceremony on Friday, August 1st at St. Anthony’s Church, 909 S. 1st Ave.  Around 600 people are expected to attend this event.

 

The following day, Saturday, August 2nd, families are invited to All-Star games in all division and a 3 point dunk contest followed by 3 point shoot-out. Free food and refreshments beginning at 6:oo PM at Grant Park, 701 S. 3rd Ave.

“Late Night Basketball has become an institution in our community,” says Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox.  “We are proud to incorporate this long-standing program as part of the newly-launched Maricopa Crime Prevention Initiative.  The objective of Late Night Basketball is in line with the goal of the Initiative, to provide positive alternatives and role models for our community youth to encourage them to become law-abiding, productive citizens.”     

 

Earl and Mary Rose Wilcox launched the youth tournament 18 years ago to provide a positive alternative to drugs, violence and gang involvement. The program has been praised at the national level as a great method for preventing crime.
