Chandler Reds Set to Challenge Mexico's Champions

An international baseball game will be played Friday, Nov. 16, at 6:00 p.m. in Obregon, Sonora as Mexico’s 2007 Silver Medal National Olympic Baseball Team takes on the Chandler Reds, featuring nine of the 2007 Western Region Little League Champions that played in the 2007 Little League World Series.

“This will be a tough competition,” said Mary Rose Wilcox, District 5 Supervisor and Chairperson of the Arizona-Mexico Commission (AMC) Ad Hoc Sports Committee who organized the event, “but our true goal is to foster international friendships. “

The tournament will be held in conjunction with the 2007 AMC Fall Plenary Session, in Ciudad Obregon, Sonora.   Governor Janet Napolitano and Governor Eduardo Bours of Sonora, Mexico will also be in attendance during the baseball tournament to exchange the “Friendship Cup” trophy.

Coaching staff for the Chandler Reds will feature Clay Bellinger, former major-league player with the New York Yankees, who earned three Major League World Series rings with two different baseball organizations.

As part of the event in Obregon, the Arizona Diamondbacks will host a clinic on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 9:00 a.m.

“The baseball event is in collaboration with the AMC to institutionalize cultural and sports exchanges that promote healthy and culturally enriched lifestyles between Arizona and the state of Sonora, Mexico,” Wilcox said.
