Sidewalks and Curbing to Reduce Dust around 43rd Avenue

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors approved a contract with FNF Construction, Inc. for up to $3 million to perform dust abatement services around 43rd Avenue between Southern and Broadway.  FNF will pave the roadway shoulder and construct sidewalks and curbing to assist Maricopa County and the State of Arizona in meeting federally mandated Air Quality standards.

Beginning this month, May 2007, the Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) will manage FNF’s installation of paved roadway shoulders or sidewalks on several local streets as part of MCDOT’s ongoing Air Quality and Abatement Program.

The project is slated for completion by August 2007.

Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox, District 5, says, “Adding sidewalks and curbing is an important step toward reducing dust pollution and part of Maricopa County’s plan to meet the current guidelines set by the EPA.”

The EPA has mandated that Maricopa County put together a plan to reduce particulate matter (dust) pollution by five percent each year until the federal health standard is attained.

This environmental air quality dust abatement program is paving and improving dirt roads identified in MCDOT’s PM10 Roads Program in compliance with federal EPA mandates and Maricopa County’s air quality plan.

Supervisor Wilcox will be hosting a community meeting with neighborhood residents to determine if they prefer sidewalks or curbing in their areas.  She encourages you to visit the Maricopa County website: www.BringBackBlue.org and learn more about what each of us can do to keep the dust down on the ground and out of our lungs.
