Maricopa County agencies collaborate to bring attention to pets and parks
(Mesa) – Maricopa County’s Parks & Recreation and Animal Care & Control departments are partnering to bring attention to adoptable animals and county parks. On November 2, the agencies will launch a Wag & Walk Adoption Hike program at Usery Mountain Regional Park in Mesa. The program is designed to provide hikers the opportunity to meet potential canine hiking companions, while enjoying one of the county’s most beautiful parks. “This is a great example of collaboration between county departments. I am pleased that this partnership will highlight Usery Mountain Park while also encouraging pet adoption,” said Maricopa County Board of Supervisors Steve Chucri, District 2.
The one-mile trek takes participants (human and canine) on a wide, barrier-free path along Usery Mountain’s Merkle Trail. The 3,648-acre park offers visitors stunning views with a large variety of native plants and wildlife. Animal Care & Control volunteers will be hiking with several adoptable dogs from the agency’s East Valley shelter. The hike will also feature topics such as trail etiquette and safety tips for dog owners.
Wag & Walk Adoption Hikes are scheduled for the first Saturday of each month through April. Participants are asked to meet at the park’s Merkle Trailhead by 9 a.m. Hikers are reminded to bring water, sun protection and sturdy footwear. Friendly leashed dogs are invited to attend, but must be at least six months of age and current on their vaccinations. Dog owners are asked to bring water, bowl, and bags to pick up after their pet. There is a $6 per vehicle park entry fee.
Usery Mountain Regional Park is located at 3939 N. Usery Pass Road in Mesa.
