Skim across the open water in style

(Peoria) – Have you ever wondered what it would be like to skim across a flat water lake in a kayak or canoe? Wonder no more; first-time paddlers now have an opportunity to attend not one but two on-water paddle classes.

The first class, Get Wet: Beginner Kayaking, is geared to toward individuals who are interested in learning about kayaking safety, paddling techniques, navigation tips and equipment.

The course is broken down into two sessions, classroom and on-water instruction. The classroom session, hosted on Friday, September 13 at 6 p.m. at Cabela’s in Glendale, is a free one-hour informational session about kayaking equipment and the fun you can have kayaking.

On Saturday, September 21st, classroom attendees are invited to join the Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department park rangers for a three-hour on-water paddling session at the Desert Outdoor Center at Lake Pleasant.

To ensure that those who attend the on-water session are prepared, kayaks, paddles and life-jackets are included with the registration fee. Participants are required to come armed with a sense of adventure and the ability to relax, laugh and have a good time!

For those who prefer to skim the water in tandem with a friend or family member, the agencies are also offering a Quick Start Your Canoe beginner flat water class. The Quick Start Your Canoe class is designed to introduce beginner paddlers to basic canoe skills and provide participants with enough knowledge to enjoy the sport of tandem canoeing on flat water.

The informational classroom session for the Quick Start Your Canoe program will be hosted by Cabela’s on Friday, September 20th at 6 p.m. and is free to everyone.

Individuals interested in participating in the four-hour on-water paddle session at the Desert Outdoor Center at Lake Pleasant must register and pre-pay for the Saturday, September 28th session immediately following the course at Cabela’s.

The cost for the on-water portion for each class is $40 per person. Participants must be 12-years or older to attend the on-water portion of the program. Cabela’s is located at 9380 W. Glendale Avenue in Glendale. The Desert Outdoor Center at Lake Pleasant is located at 41402 N. 87th Avenue in Peoria. Participants will be instructed on what to wear and where to go for the on-water sessions. For more information on the upcoming events, visit
