Maricopa County Parks To Extend Trail Hours
(Maricopa County) Beginning May 1, outdoor enthusiasts will have more time to recreate in a County park! The Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department will extend trail hours in all County parks from dusk to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday. On Friday and Saturday, the trails will remain open until 10 p.m.
The decision to extend trail hours was initially made to provide summer visitors the opportunity to use the trails after sunset when the temperatures are slightly cooler. However, upon further study, the department has decided to continue the new trail hours year-round to give winter visitors the opportunity to recreate longer since the sun sets earlier in the day.
“Up until now, we’ve only utilized the trails during the evening hours for full moon hikes and moonlight mountain bike rides. These events have been very popular with our visitors so we wanted to provide them with additional opportunities to access the 240-miles of trails available in the County’s regional park system,” stated R.J. Cardin, Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department Director.
With the warm weather fast approaching, those who use the trails during the extended hours are encouraged to rehydrate frequently, hike with individuals who are familiar with the trail system and notify family members of planned hiking routes and an estimated time of return.
