“MYSTIC CHORDS OF MEMORY” HONORS SOLDIERS AT LIBRARY
To understand what happens during war, a good tip is to talk with a veteran who has been in harm’s way. The Northwest Regional Library, Surprise, is hosting a three-day program, Nov. 17-19, which provides a soldier’s perspective about the cost of freedom reflected in the sacrifices of war.
“Mystic Chords of Memory” combines three nights of mesmerizing conversation wrapped in unfathomable stories of pride and heroism, a gut-wrenching film, and accounts of war’s cruelest accomplices—blind hatred, inexplicable prejudice and unimaginable atrocities.
The program is not recommended for those under age 12. Attendees will gain a new and greater respect of those who have served and continue to serve in the U.S. armed forces. The program includes:
· Tuesday, Nov. 17, 7-8pm: Introduction to U.S. military history, review of timelines, vocabulary, and discussion of the consequences of oppression and discrimination during wartime. Participants prepare to interview community military veterans for the following evening.
· Wednesday, Nov. 18, 7-8:30pm: Veterans share their wisdom and insight about their experiences. Intimate seating arrangements in tables of 10 persons each who interview veterans. RSVP required for this night. Call 602-652-3405 or email lindabarzilai@mcldaz.org.
· Thursday, Nov. 19, 6:45-9pm: Screening of original German propaganda film, “Euthanasia: Justifying the Killing of Innocents.” Dachau liberator Jack Nemerov describes his experience of being among the first American troops to enter Dachau Concentration Camp.
The Wall of Pride, which consists of memorabilia, has been erected at Northwest to honor and pay tribute to some of Surprise’s military veterans.
Northwest Regional is one of 17 libraries of the Maricopa County Library District. The Library District welcomed more than 3.4 million visitors in fiscal year 2008-09. For more information about library services and programs, visit www.mcldaz.org.
