Air Monitoring Surveillance Project

Clean air is a community effort.  Help us make more clean air.

Some of the highest levels of particulate matter (PM10-dust, smoke, fumes) pollution in Maricopa County are found around the Durango, West 43rd Ave, South Phoenix, Higley, Buckeye, and Zuni Hills ambient air quality monitors (map of the monitor locations can be found at: www.maricopa.gov/aq).  In an effort to decrease pollution levels the Maricopa County Air Quality Department, in conjunction with local cities and towns, will focus inspection and surveillance efforts within a two mile radius of each of these monitoring sites over the next several months.  During the surveillance period, you will see an increase in the number of inspections conducted on construction sites, businesses, vacant lots and other sources of PM10.

PM10 can cause or be a contributing factor to several health problems, including but not limited to: asthma, bronchitis, and heart disease. This focused effort will help us clean the air, thus improving your life and the lives of those who live and work in your communities.

Here are some ideas you can implement at your business or on your property to help clean our air (check with your local city for additional ordinances and options):

·         Drive slowly on any unpaved roads or parking areas

·         Pave or gravel parking areas and roads or other areas used by vehicles

·         Avoid burning on No Burn Days and only burn clean dry wood on other days

·         Do not blow loose debris into the streets with a leaf blower

·         Clean up trackout and mud from the street in front of your property

·         Educate yourself on the dust control rules and requirements

·         Stabilize open areas of land with a crust created by spraying the area with water or an EPA approved dust suppressant

·         Use fencing or berms to keep vehicles and people from disturbing open areas

·         Cover the dirt area with vegetation

·         Only use ATVs and OHVs in approved areas

Since we are all part of the problem, we can all be part of the solution.  Each of us in Maricopa County must take personal responsibility and take action to create a healthier environment for ourselves, our children, and our communities.
