BIG READ IGNITES CELBRATION AT PERRY
Perry Branch Library in Gilbert is hosting three events in October to celebrate The Big Read. The Big Read is a national initiative designed to re-energize literary reading in American popular culture among adults and youth.
“Fahrenheit 451 is at the center of our Big Read celebration,” said Perry library manager, Jennifer Miele. “We welcome adults and other family members on October 14 to screen the movie and discuss author Ray Bradbury’s 1953 epic novel,” she continued.
In Fahrenheit, firemen are encouraged to burn reading material. “Imagine what life in America might be like if books were unceremoniously banned for the good of humanity,” a horrified Miele confided.
Family Storytime on October 13 is part of the Big Read extravaganza. Children will enjoy stories, songs and refreshments around a “campfire”.
Perry’s Big Read schedule of events can be found on the Maricopa County Library District’s Web site at www.mcldaz.org. Several other Library District facilities will also hold Big Read activities.
More than 3.4 million customers visited the District’s 17 libraries in fiscal year 2008-09.
