At Work or Home: Don’t Face an Emergency Unprepared

Maricopa County Public Health & Univision Host

Emergency Preparedness Expo and Phone Bank,

Thursday, August 27 at Phoenix College

Think you are prepared for any emergency? Find out at the Emergency Preparedness Expo Thursday, August 27 from 4 - 8 p.m. at Phoenix College Freshman Square; Ed & Verma Pastor Plaza located near 12th Avenue and Thomas Rd.  This 1st annual event is hosted by the Phoenix College Raul H. Castro Institute, Maricopa County Department of Public Health and Univision.

“The expo and phone bank will be conducted solely in Spanish in an effort to emphasize the importance of being prepared for any emergency to our mono-lingual community,” said Dr. Bob England, director of Maricopa County Department of Public Health.

Sponsors from all over the Valley will provide information about a number of preparedness issues such as water and fire safety, energy saving techniques, Novel H1N1 flu prevention, important document storage, and what to do when health insurance is not available.

In conjunction with the expo, Univision, along with community volunteers, will be hosting a telethon at the Bulpitt Auditorium for emergency preparedness from 5 - 10:30 p.m. to answer questions from the public.

“This is a great way to kick off National Preparedness Month happening in September,” said Mary Rose Wilcox, Maricopa County Supervisor for District 5. “We invite the community to come out and learn how they can keep their families safe.”

Organizations partnering with Public Health and Univision include Maricopa Integrated Health System, Community Information and Referral, Phoenix College, Glendale and Phoenix Fire Departments, BlueCross BlueShield of Arizona, Mexican Consulate, APS, SRP and Health Choice Arizona.

There will be no charge to attend and plenty of free items will be available to participants. First aid kits, car seats, and smoke detectors will be amongst the items given away to promote safety. The first 500 families who show up will receive the first aid kits.
