Fourth of July a tough time at county shelter

The Fourth of July is right around the corner. More animals become lost during the Fourth of July weekend than any other time of year. The shelters quickly overload. What’s more, Maricopa County Animal Care and Control will be closed one day. Although many government offices will be closed on July 3rd, MCACC's shelters will keep normal hours that day.  However, on Saturday the 4th, the shelters will be closed. This means more animals coming in and none leaving.

MCACC is asking the community to help out. Keep your pets securely at home. If you are planning to turn in a dog or cat, wait until after the weekend. We do not want to euthanize animals because we are out of space. If you are going to adopt, it is a wonderful time. We have many furry friends looking for new homes and great adoption prices.

Max Wilson, Chairman of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, urges all pet owners to keep their pets safe at home.  “More animals are lost Fourth of July weekend than any other time of year,” he said.  “If animals are left outdoors, they might get anxious and run away.”

Make sure your pet does not get lost. Be sure your dog or cat has an appropriate fitting collar and that they are wearing it. Your dog should have his dog license attached to the collar and your cat should wear an id tag with your contact information on it. If your pet gets lost, visit both of MCACC’s Animal Care Centers every day. Post your pet’s information around the neighborhood and online at www.pets911.com as well.
