Cats are Overflowing the Shelter

Maricopa County Animal Care and Control (MCACC) is in a cat crisis. As of this morning, the West Valley Animal Care Center has 292 cats in their facility. This is well over the comfortable 100 that are normally housed at the facility, or the 150 when the place is full like most Junes.

MCACC is out of space! Cats are stowed in every available nook and cranny. If another large intake day happens, without people adopting them, MCACC may have to euthanize some cats. MCACC has not euthanized animals for space in well over two years. The community’s help is needed. Now is the time to come in and adopt. MCACC has some great adoption fees for cats right now. Adult cats are $34, kittens are $50 and the second cat is half-price.  Another option is to become a foster family for all the kittens coming in. It is kitten season and if they are less than 2 pounds, they cannot be adopted. If somebody is considering surrendering their cat to us right now, please hold off. If they could wait a week, it would make a big difference. Any cat coming into the shelter is at risk of being euthanized. Also, if you own a cat, get an ID tag or microchip for it. That way, if the cat does get out, he or she can get back to their owners.
