(Phoenix) – Maricopa County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Donald D. Covey, announced the annexation of unorganized territory into Kyrene Elementary School District No. 28 and Tempe Union High School District No. 213.
Pursuant to A.R.S. § 15-445(A), Maricopa County Superintendent of Schools is required to reestablish the boundaries of these two districts after being notified by the Superintendent of Public Instruction that the annual number of certificates of educational convenience or students attending through open enrollment into an adjacent school district from a single unorganized territory exceeded one hundred fifty. With only one elementary school district and one high school district accepting at least twenty-five percent of their open enrollment or certificates of educational convenience students, the boundaries of the elementary and high school districts could be reestablished to include the unorganized territory without an election. In addition, the Maricopa County Superintendent of Schools conducted two public meetings at which public testimony was heard and questions answered prior to reestablishing the boundaries.
Letters notifying the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, Maricopa County Assessor, and Maricopa County Treasurer were hand-delivered Monday afternoon. The newly drawn Kyrene District map, which reflects the boundary changes, can be viewed at the following link: http://www.maricopa.gov/Schools/Pdf/map_KyreneNewBoundaries.pdf. The new district boundaries are effective August 10, 2009, the beginning of the school year for both districts.
