Gila River Sunrise Hike - Estrella
Estrella Mountain Park
Get up with the sun and beat the heat! We are going to hike the Gila River riparian area. A good opportunity to see wildlife! Come prepared to hike with sturdy shoes that may get wet, a big hat, more water than you think you’ll need and a smile. Ranger Mark will lead the hike from the Nature Center. This is a great way to start the day! And don't forget your camera/binoculars! Please, no pets.

"Get Wet Beginner Kayaking" Program with Cabela's
Desert Outdoor Center
Have you ever wanted to give flat water lake kayaking a try? Well here is your chance. Lake Pleasant Regional Park, the Desert Outdoor Center, and Cabelas is once again presenting the "Get Wet Beginner Kayaking" program. A free one hour informational classroom session will be held at the Glendale Cabelas on Friday evening (you will not get wet). You do not need to register to attend the classroom session. Then if you would like to experience flat-water kayaking on Lake Plesant, you may sign up for an on-the-water session that will be held at the Desert Outdoor Center. The $35 registration fee for the on-the-water portion will be collected during the evening classroom session at Cabelas. Registration for on-the-water sessions begins at 6:00pm on a first come, first serve basis. Cash or check only please. Ages 12 & up, call 602-372-7470 for more information.

Dates of free 1-hour classroom introductory sessions are:

August 3, August 10, August 24, September 7

Dates for 3-hour on-the-water sessions are:

August 4, August 18, September 22 (pick a 7AM or 9AM arrival time; sign up and pay at any of the Friday classes, on-water sessions fill up fast, so first come, first served)

PLEASE NOTE: The Desert Outdoor Center is a gated facility, so you must be registered to attend. Gates will be open 30 minutes before each session begins.

***There is no boat ramp access to launch a kayak at this facility, so please do not bring your personal kayaks. The boat dock is about a 1/4 mi down from the facility, so please be prepared for a short hike.

“Monsoon Mayhem” Family Fun Water Day - San Tan
San Tan Mountain Regional Park
Looking for a cool way to cool off? Enjoy a refreshing assortment of water activities at the park, while learning about some of the special animals of the desert. Don’t forget to bring a towel and water shoes, because you will get soaked. Sunscreen and appropriate sun attire is encouraged. Fun for the entire family. NOTE: This program is part of the “County Parks are getting Wet ‘n’ Wild this summer” series and we will be raffling off a family-four pack at the end of the program.

Shore Fishing Spots of Lake Pleasant "on-going" Talk - Lake Pleasant
Lake Pleasant Regional Park
Stop by the Lake Pleasant Visitor Center and find out where the good shoreline fishing spots are located at Lake Pleasant. Naturalist Frank has been fishing the shores of Lake Pleasant for many years, and he catches 'em! Frank can also answer many of your other questions about the lake and surrounding area, including about plants and wildlife. Come find out where and how to catch some of Lake Pleasants gilled friends. Frank will be at the Visitor Center from 11AM to 1PM to address shoreline fishing and a lot more, so stop by anytime between these times.

Why do saguaros grow arms? How old do they get? What are the unique strategies they use to survive and thrive in our desert? If you would like to know the answers to these questions, or any questions you may have about saguaros, then this one-hour presentation is for you! Bring your sandwich to the “Brown-Bag It” series inside our Nature Center as Ranger B shares his love for the “jolly green giant of the desert.” Location: Nature Center.

Pleasant Paddlers Program - Sun Set & Moon Paddle of Castle Creek - Lake Pleasant
Lake Pleasant Regional Park
Come on out for a scenic sun set and moon rise, and have fun amoung the coves of the Castle Creek Arm. We will meet near the shoreline, just north of the 4-lane boat launch area, look for all the kayaks. There is a gate open, drive through and park near shoreline. If space is limited you can also park on the dirt shoreline on either side of the 4-lane boat launch. Bring water, a flashlight, light sticks are good for your kayak too, and you must wear your PFD (life vest)! I'm sure there will be a cookie stop somewhere along the way!

Archery 101 - Usery Park
Usery Mountain Regional Park
Interested in archery? Curious about how to shoot a bow? Come to Usery Park and find out! You will discover how fun archery really is! Participants will experience a fun and safe introduction to recreational and international-style target archery. Equipment will be provided. This class is open to anyone ages 8 and up. Minors must be accompanied by an adult. Advanced registration is required. Please call the park at 480-984-0032 to register. Limited to 20 participants. Please bring water, hats, and closed-toe shoes. Meet at the Archery Range.
