Common Terms

 

  • Epidemiology—The study of the patterns, causes, and effects of health and disease conditions in defined populations.
  • Prevalence – the total number of cases of a disease in a given population
  • Prevalence rate – the proportion of persons in a population who have a particular disease or attribute at a specified point in time or over a specified period of time
  • Incidence – extent or frequency of occurrence
  • Incidence rate – the number of new cases of a disease occurring during a given period as a proportion of the number of people in the population
  • Morbidity – the incidence of a disease
  • Mortality – the incidence of death
  • Sensitivity – How often test results are positive for a people that truly have the condition/risk factor in question (a true positive rate). *If a test is highly sensitive and the test result is negative, you can be nearly certain the case is negative for the condition/risk factor.
  • Specificity – How often test results are negative for people that truly do not have the condition/risk factor in question (a true negative rate). *If a test is highly specific and the result is positive, you can be nearly certain the case is positive for the condition/risk factor.
  • Target population – the population about which information is desired (ex. Men age 25-35; births occurring in a specific zip code)
  • Communicable Disease – an infectious disease that can be transmitted from one individual to another either directly by contact or indirectly by fomites and vectors.
  • Reportable Diseases – listing of suspected or confirmed communicable diseases that are mandated by state code to be reported to a local public health entity.
  • Chronic Diseases – a disease of long duration or frequent recurrence (ex. cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity)
