Andy Kunasek
Maricopa County Supervisor, District 3

By the unanimous vote of his fellow board members, Andy Kunasek was appointed to the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors in September of 1997. Kunasek was subsequently elected by the constituency of District Three in 1998 and re-elected in 2000, 2004, 2008, and 2012. He’s served as chairman of this five-member board five times.

Kunasek’s first and foremost concern is fiscal accountability and responsible government. Under his leadership, Maricopa County has earned a national reputation for sound management and accountability. Kunasek has sponsored policies to ensure that Maricopa County carries no general obligation debt, making this large county one of the few of any size with no debt. Maricopa County uses a pay-as-you-go philosophy when constructing capital infrastructure like buildings, saving taxpayers hundreds of millions in interest charges.

Kunasek has also prioritized justice and law enforcement during his tenure at the County. Kunasek and the Board have approved more than $2 billion in public safety improvements including jails and Sheriff’s patrol equipment, and have established courts around the County to make Justice and Superior Courts more accessible and efficient.

A longtime advocate of health and wellness, Kunasek served on the Board of Health for over six years. In 2003, Kunasek was named “Outstanding Elected Official of the Year” by the National Association for County Parks & Recreation for his championing of the County’s parks system. Thousands of acres of open space and parks were added to the Maricopa County Parks system under his leadership. Kunasek is working to connect these community spaces though the creation of a continuous 242 mile trail that encompasses the Valley.

Kunasek has been active in his community having served as treasurer of the Maricopa County Republican Party, a member of the Maricopa County Trial Court Selection Committee, Maricopa County Charter Committee, and the Maricopa County Citizens Judicial Advisory Council. He was also selected as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1996.

Supervisor Kunasek serves on the NACo Defined Contribution and Retirement Advisory Committee and is past president of the Arizona County Supervisors Association. He serves on the MAG Human Services Coordinating Committee, is on the Board of Directors of the Audubon Society, Greater Phoenix Economic Council, Great Hearts Academies and reappointed to Maricopa County Board of Health.

Kunasek owns interests in plant nursery and other agricultural oriented enterprises, and is president of Mercado Management, a diversified land acquisition and real estate management company. Supervisor Kunasek is an Arizona native and is a graduate of Mountain View High School in Mesa, Arizona. He earned a bachelor’s degree in management from Arizona State University.

Kunasek, his wife Kim, and their three children live in the North Valley.
